Milk Abstracts

We attempted a little bit of science in photography class – and learned at oat and coconut  milk do not react to dish soap the same way that cow’s milk does. We also learned that kids enjoy swirling colors around and creating abstracts.

Refraction

Students were given the opportunity to bend light using prisms and lens balls. They discovered how to focus the camera with a distortion as well as learning more about focal points and how to set up an image.

Dancing around the teacup

Dancing around the teacup is a phrase used mostly by photographers at National Geographic. The phrase is used to indicate spending time with a subject. For our assignment, students were to take 12 images of one subject, spend time with the subject to find at least 12 ways to look at it.

Halloween and Fall of 2022

Students were tasked with creating fun or spooky photographs of either fall or Halloween. They could choose to show the fun side of things, evoke the wonder of autumn and colors, create spooky, moody images or go for the strange or horrifying!

Enjoy…

Black and White Photography

Students looked at photographing objects and editing in black and white. They started by taking some older photos and practicing editing skills, then moved on to composing new photographs with the idea of black and white in mind.

Mood

After students worked with light, we talked about how light and color can affect the mood of a photograph. We practiced some of these techniques to create different moods and emotions. Not all students turn in images to blog and some photos feature students so we choose not to post them.

The Start of a New School Year

This school year has brought some changes – back to an 8 period schedule, new staff and administration, and a new group of students for photography class.  Starting a new class means we work on file management and file sharing; learning how to save files from sd cards, Apple devices and Chrome devices to learning Google Classroom, Google Photos, and Adobe Lightroom downloading! It’s a busy and chaotic time for the start of the year. The first assignment we will post is a sampling of Light – angles of light, types of light, and some creative uses of light.

Bubbles

The weather was fantastic last week – the classes took advantage of this to go outside and experiment with bubble photography. Two in class labs were offered (students are always encouraged to come up with their own artistic interpretation of a topic as well): bubbles for blowing and seltzer and fruit.   We learned that bubbles sometimes require manual focus, that a breeze isn’t helpful and that the camera doesn’t always know best.

Enjoy!

Working with Shadows

For this assignment, students studied shadows and figured out the shapes of shadows and how to best show them off.
